Somehow, after struggling to establish an ongoing project in Bulgaria since 2004 (more on that later), things have really come together in the last few months. The project – at least temporarily christened “TRAP” (yes indeed), the Tundzha Regional Archaeological Project – is running like a textbook example of an archaeological research program. We did surface survey and remote sensing in March, a geophysicist came out and did magnetometry on the most promising concentrations of surface artefacts in early April, and now four test trenches have gone in at the most promising anomolies detected through the magnetometry. We’ll open at least three or four more trenches at other concentrations over the next two weeks, an wrap things up by mid May. After beating our heads agains the wall of Bulgarian archaeology for nearly five years, we’re stunned…

to the much delayed first post of the CitiesInDust archaeology blog. Adela and I supervise the foreign continent of what we would like to think is a best-practices archaeological project in Bulgaria – the Tundzha Regional Archaeological Project (yes, all archaeological projects are named to produce the most fitting acronym).

Seen enough Indiana Jones films or episodes of Time Team and want to know what an actual project is like? Here we’ll describe the project and what we do – our goals, hopes, experiences and setbacks. You’ve caught us during a hiatus in the middle of of a major campaign (hense the delay getting this blog going), so we’ll bring you up to date and then you can follow along.

We’ll mostly talk about archaeology, but also see if we can’t introduce you to the culture of Bulgaria, someplace you’ve probably never even thought about in relation to archaeology (or perhaps anything else for that matter). Since we are both also students of ancient history and current events, we probably won’t be able to restrain ourselves from occasional discussing what light the former might shed on the latter.
